CABLE FLYES

Cable Flyes – Correct Execution, Technique & Breathing

Cable Flyes for Chest – Correct Technique and Execution – Drachensang Academy International

Cable flyes are a classic chest exercise in which the arms are brought together in front of the body through a controlled, curved movement. Unlike traditional pressing exercises such as the bench press, the focus is not on extending the arms but on bringing the upper arms together.

The cable machine provides consistent resistance throughout much of the movement. This allows the chest muscles to be trained effectively both when bringing the arms together and during the controlled return movement.

The key factors are a manageable training weight, a stable body position and slightly bent elbows, with the elbow angle remaining as consistent as possible throughout the movement.

VIDEO: CABLE FLYES

The video demonstrates the complete cable flyes movement step by step.

Shown in the video:

- Adjusting the cable pulleys
- Correct starting position
- Stable body posture
- Arm and elbow positioning
- Bringing the arms together in a curved movement
- Controlled final position
- Slow return movement
- Returning to the starting position

MUSCLES WORKED

Cable flyes primarily target the chest muscles.

Primary muscle:

- Pectoralis major (main chest muscle)

Supporting muscles:

- Anterior deltoids (front shoulders)
- Stabilising muscles of the shoulder girdle
- Arm and forearm muscles for stabilising the handles
- Core muscles for maintaining a stable body position

Different cable pulley settings and movement directions can change the angle of resistance.

--------------------

ADJUSTING THE CABLE PULLEYS

Set both sides of the cable machine to the same height.

Depending on the variation, the pulleys can be positioned at approximately chest or shoulder height.

Start with a moderate weight that allows you to perform the entire movement without using momentum while maintaining a stable arm position.

Before training, check that the handles and carabiners are securely attached.

--------------------

STARTING POSITION

Stand in the centre between the cable pulleys and hold one handle in each hand.

Take a small, controlled step forwards so that there is already tension in the cables in the starting position.

Keep your feet firmly planted on the floor. A staggered stance can provide additional stability.

Bend your knees slightly and keep your core stable.

Position your arms out to the sides of your body. Keep your elbows slightly bent and maintain a consistent elbow position throughout the movement.

Keep your shoulders controlled and avoid pulling them forwards.

HOW TO PERFORM THE EXERCISE

1. Starting the movement

Begin with your arms in an open position.

Slowly bring both arms forwards in a controlled, curved movement.

Keep your upper body as still as possible.

--------------------

2. Bringing the arms together

Continue bringing the handles together in front of your body.

Keep your elbows slightly bent. Avoid bending your arms significantly during the movement and then straightening them again.

The movement should take place primarily at the shoulder joints.

--------------------

3. Final position

Bring your hands together in front of your chest under control.

The handles do not need to touch. What matters is maintaining control and actively engaging the chest muscles.

Hold the final position briefly without allowing your shoulders to move forwards uncontrollably.

--------------------

4. Return movement

Slowly open your arms along the same curved movement path.

Do not allow the weight to pull your arms backwards.

Only move your arms back as far as you can feel a noticeable stretch in your chest muscles while maintaining a stable shoulder position.

Then begin the next repetition.

--------------------

BREATHING TECHNIQUE

A simple breathing technique for cable flyes is:

When opening your arms: inhale.

When bringing your arms together: exhale.

Breathing should remain calm and controlled, coordinated with the movement.

--------------------

CABLE FLYES FOR MUSCLE GROWTH

Cable flyes are particularly suitable as a supplementary exercise in a chest workout.

A practical training range could be:

- 3–4 working sets
- Approximately 8–15 repetitions
- Moderate training weight
- Controlled return movement
- Smoothly bringing the arms together

The repetition range is not a fixed requirement. Training weight, training volume and repetitions should be adjusted according to experience and individual goals.

For cable flyes, controlled movement should take priority over lifting the heaviest possible weight.

--------------------

CABLE FLYES FOR STRENGTH

Cable flyes are not a traditional exercise for maximal strength training.

Compound exercises such as the bench press are generally better suited to developing maximal pressing strength.

Cable flyes can be included as a supplementary exercise to train the chest muscles through a different movement pattern.

Very heavy weights and extremely low repetition ranges are generally unnecessary for this exercise. Movement control and correct technique should remain the priority.

--------------------

CABLE FLYES FOR MUSCULAR ENDURANCE

For muscular endurance training, lighter weights and higher repetition ranges can be used.

For example:

- Approximately 15–20 repetitions
- 2–4 working sets
- Light to moderate training weight
- Controlled movements
- Shorter rest periods between sets

Even when performing higher repetitions, maintain a stable body position and controlled arm movement.

--------------------

IMPORTANT TECHNIQUE TIPS

- Set both cable pulleys to the same height.
- Adopt a stable stance.
- Keep your core stable throughout the movement.
- Keep your elbows slightly bent.
- Maintain a consistent elbow angle.
- Move your arms through a smooth, curved path.
- Keep your shoulders controlled.
- Avoid using momentum.
- Bring the handles together in front of your chest under control.
- Perform the return movement slowly.
- Only open your arms as far as you can maintain a stable shoulder position.
- Do not increase the training weight at the expense of technique.

--------------------

COMMON MISTAKES

Using excessively heavy weights

Using too much weight often causes the upper body and arms to move with momentum. This reduces control of the fly movement.

Bending the elbows too much

Significantly bending the elbows when bringing the arms together and then straightening them turns the exercise increasingly into a pressing movement.

Fully straightening the arms

Keep your elbows slightly bent. Fully straight arms create a long lever and make the movement more difficult to control.

Returning too quickly

Do not allow the weights to pull your arms apart uncontrollably. The return movement is also part of the exercise and should be performed under control.

Using an excessive range of motion

There is no need to move your arms as far backwards as possible. The important factor is maintaining a stable shoulder position throughout the range of motion.

Excessive upper body movement

Excessive swinging forwards and backwards is often a sign that the training weight is too heavy.

--------------------

SAFETY

Choose a training weight that you can control throughout the entire movement.

Before starting the exercise, check that the handles, carabiners and cables are securely attached.

Bring the cables into the starting position under control and do not allow the weights to snap back after your final set.

Adjust the range of motion to your individual shoulder mobility.

If you experience pain in your shoulders, elbows or chest, stop the exercise and investigate the cause.

--------------------

CONCLUSION

Cable flyes are a versatile supplementary exercise for chest training. The curved arm movement allows the chest muscles to be trained through a controlled range of motion.

The main priorities are a stable body position, slightly bent elbows and slow, controlled movement in both directions.

For cable flyes, a moderate training weight and correct technique are more important than lifting the heaviest possible weights.
